<Red Salute> Today is Antonio Gramsci's death anniversary (1891-1937). This brave Communist was murdered by the barbarous Italian Fascists. Gramsci's writings and example continue to guide us. He was clear-sighted in his views of what wretchedness is inherited from the past, and what hope is also in our inventory.
I am reading his comrade Togliatti's writings towards an introduction for a new International Publishers edition of his Lectures on Fascism. The entire world of Communism in Italy of that period is one of great bravery and sacrifice. The PCI was a proletarian and peasant party, whose role in the Resistance against Fascism is exemplary. The dividend was almost paid off in 1948, when the PCI - led by Togliatti - was set to win the general elections. The CIA intervened and made sure that the repellent De Gasperi of the Christian Democrats took the honours. Even thought De Gasperi later broke with the fascists, in the early years his Italian People's Party went into coalition with Mussolini. This was the character of the political front chosen by the CIA in its interference in Italian politics. More on that later.
For now, Comrade Gramsci. Red Salute.
