<Ambedkar Jayanti> From LeftWord Books comes a short note on Dr. B. R. Ambedkar - as well as brief comments on our forthcoming book by him, India and Communism, with an introduction by Anand Teltumbde, as well as on the new website, Communists Against Caste (whose Facebook page is at Communists Against Caste): http://mayday.leftword.com/blog/dr-ambedkar-and-communism/.

The point of Dr. Ambedkar’s movement -- as he said in 1927 during the Mahad Satyagraha -- was to fight to ensure that our society ‘trea

<Pride> This evening my daughter gave me her sense of Nasser and Nasserism - with the Suez at the core. It was Suez that showed why Nasser was held in the hearts of so many around the Third World. The journey went from 1952 to 1967.

Then, as an afterthought, she mentioned that Sayyid Qutb seemed to be the mirror image of Leo Strauss (the echo here was with the Adam Curtis documentary).

We are in April, the month of Bandung. This is a good time of the year to recall Nasser.

Dear Friends,

Today, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is in Moscow to talk to the Russians about - among other matters - Syria. It is said that Tillerson will indicate to the Russians that they must pressure the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad. There is mystery here:

  • About what will Tillerson pressure the Russians - that Assad must no longer target civilians and use chemical weapons? that Assad must go? that the Russians must isolate Iran in the Syrian sector?
  • About what weapons Tillerson carries with him to force Russia to do this - that the US would then lift its sanctions? th

<Smile> Sister Saffiyah Khan faces off against Ian Crossland, a fascist from the English Defense League. She smiles at his intolerance with the grace of someone who knows that she is standing on the right side of History. When the EDL seemed to gather around Saira Zafar who wears a hijab, Saffiyah stepped in.

Later Crossland wrote, 'she’s lucky she’s got any teeth left'. This is the character of the fascist.

Khan's parents are Pakistani and Bosnian. She had previously been chanting, 'Nazi scum off the streets'. Later she said, 'How is it that I’m smiling? Som

Bomb Syria?

Dear Friends,

My apologizes for coming to you twice in a week.

Yesterday, in the UN Security Council, US Ambassador Nikki Haley made a presentation about the terrible gas attack in Syria which killed almost sixty people. She insinuated that the culprit is the government in Damascus and she suggested - tepidly - that the US might consider some kind of military action against the government.

This came alongside her own statement that the author of this terrible strike is not yet precisely known.

At Alternet, I have an essay which goes over the question of how the

Dear Friends,

Today - 4 April - is the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's monumental speech delivered at New York's Riverside Church: Vietnam, A Time to Break the Silence.

When I first encountered this speech years ago I was struck by Dr. King's compassionate anger and his great honesty. This was a speech that channeled Frantz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth (1961), and of course the Third World upsurge which Dr. Ki
