Entrance to the Hugo Chavez camp

A day ago, this message of urgency arrived from the Landless Workers' Movement (MST) in Brazil:

Dear comrades

An aggressive attack is being waged against MST landless peasants in the northern state of Pará, Brazil.

Large-scale landowners along with local judicial authorities, mainstream media and the Brazilian military police are targeting MST camps throughout the country.

2.000 peasant families living in 20 camps located in the northern State of Pará are under the risk of being violently evicted until the end of the year

On Monday (11) gunman attacked the Hugo Chavez camp. Seven heavily armed man - illegal "private security" hired by the landowners, shot against unarmed peasants, including women and children.

The judicial order for the eviction of the 300 families living at Hugo Chavez camp was confirmed to be carried out by the military police tomorrow (14). There are expected more violence, since the families are ready to resist.

The recent escalation of violence takes place as the Brazilian government continues to use regressive land ownership laws, which have resulted in devastating consequences on landless and displaced agricultural workers.

During the administration of the unelected Brazilian President Michel Temer, the MST has witnessed increased levels of state violence and criminalization against our members

In light of the escalating violence and repression, we are issuing a call of international solidarity!

The Hugo Chavez camp is one of twenty in the State of Pará that the government has slated for eviction. From South Africa, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa sent a statement of solidarity with the MST and the occupants of the camp:

NUMSA condemns the right wing Brazilian government for waging war on the poor

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) condemns the Brazilian government for its aggressive attack against landless farmers in the Northern state of Pará, in Brazil. The Landless Workers Movement (MST), which is fighting for land and social justice for the poor and working class majority of Brazil, reported on Tuesday that the right wing administration of President Michel Temer has launched a sustained attack on the working class and the poor of Brazil.

On Monday the MST’s “Hugo Chávez” encampment was attacked by private security which fired on thousands of unarmed, innocent families with live ammunition! They committed this heinous brutal act in spite of the fact that the encampment had been designated for planned evictions on Wednesday this week. NUMSA condemns the government of Temer for this thuggish and cowardly behavior!

The recent violence takes place as the Brazilian government continues to pursue regressive land ownership laws, which have had devastating consequences on landless and displaced agricultural workers. Temer is determined to appease his neo-liberal imperialist masters by waging a war on the ordinary people of Brazil by implementing backward capitalist macro-economic policies designed to ensure the maximum exploitation of the working class and the poor in that country. According to MST, the administration of the unelected Brazilian President Michel Temer, has brought with it, an increase in state violence and criminalization against members of their movement.

Such is Temer’s hatred for the poor and the working class of Brazil that he is allegedly using the media, the judiciary, the state and private security agents to brutalize and oppress the MST, by targeting encampments across the country.

NUMSA stands in solidarity and expresses its total support for the MST and the rural poor in Brazil. We demand an immediate end to the violence and for Temer to respect the rights and dignity of the working class and the poor. Furthermore we call on all our comrades all over the globe to join us in worldwide condemnation of the cruel, oppressive right wing regime of President Temer. We also call on our comrades to actively support the MST in any way that they can to ensure that the movement is able to defend the rights of the working class majority and the rural poor in that country. We must support them in their struggle for social justice and equality for all the people of Brazil.

We are inspired by the Argentine Marxist revolutionary comrade Che Guevara who once said:

“Always be capable of feeling deeply any injustice committed against anyone, anywhere in the world. This is the most beautiful quality in a revolutionary.”

Aluta continua!

The struggle continues!
