Why May Day? Vijay Prashad talks of the history of May Day.

 

 

May day is what Lenin called 'The Holiday of the Workers'. It harkens back to the 19th century when workers fought for an 8 hour day for a full day's wage. The slogan of the workers was "8 hours for work, 8 hours of sleep and 8 hours for what you will." Across the United States, on Sunday 1st May 1886, workers demonstrated for the 8 hour day. Chicago and Milwaukee were the epicenters. All went well as the struggle continued till May 4th, then, a
